Floyd Mayweather Vs. Andre Berto Would Be Major Disappointment. If Floyd Mayweather really ends his career by facing Andre Berto, how terribly discouraging it would be. Coming off his disappointing fight with Manny Pacquiao, while Mayweather put together a boxing clinic to beat Pacquiao easily and improve to 48-
0, the fight, especially with its $100 pricetag, was awfully underwhelming, one would have hoped Mayweather would have given a young, exciting fighter the chance to knock him off his pedestal.A fighter like Amir Khan (31-3, 19 knockouts) would have been appropriate. Or Keith Thurman (26-0, 22 KOs). Or, heck, even a match with Timothy Bradley (32-1-1, 12 KOs) — who’s split his two fights against Pacquiao — would be so much better. And though we know it’s a pipe dream, Mayweather really should fight Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) next.
Instead, Mayweather, according to TMZ , has finalized talks to complete his lucrative contract with Showtime and potentially end his Hall of Fame career with the same mark as Rocky Marciano by fighting Andre Berto (30-3, 23 knockouts) on Sept. 12.
And it’s disappointing. Not because Berto has had a bad career. He’s actually a former world titlist who, at one point in his career, seemed destined to rise from the level of respected champion to potential superstar. He’s beaten solid fighters like Steve Forbes, Juan Urango and Luis Collazo. No, Berto isn’t a bad fighter. He’s just an old one who’s suffered some disappointing defeats in the past four years.
For Mayweather to go from Pacquiao to Berto simply seems like a waste of time.
Now, the fight doesn’t appear to be officially official, although it’s clear that Berto is training for something.
So, perhaps there’s hope that Mayweather still could give a chance to Khan, who’s tasted defeat but who’s still one of the fastest fighters in the world, or Thurman, an undefeated champion who very likely could be a star in the near future.
But if not and Mayweather really does give this opportunity to Berto, it’s not difficult to determine what will happen when the two step into the ring. All you need to do is look at recent history.
