Wiko Mobile Technology, a France-based mobile phone maker, established its presence in Lagos.
The company, which offered 10 models from its extensive range of smart phones and feature phones, said it decided to explore Africa’s largest economy because its brand positioning represents a perfect match with Nigeria’s predominantly young population as well as the appeal of the growing Nigerian market.
The models of the Wiko brand launched on Wednesday are: Highway, its flagship, Rainbow, Bloom, Lenny, Sunset and Goa.
Gareth Abel, managing director, Wiko Mobile, disclosed that the smart phones would soon account for 20 per cent or 400,000 units of the estimated two million monthly mobile device market in Nigeria.
“Our launch in Nigeria is our starting point in West Africa and we have rolled out our proposition already. Our brand would stake a strong claim for its share of that market drawing on its experience in France where it became Number 2 in only three years,” he noted.
GFK Institute, an authority in the telecoms market, confirms Abel’s claim when it named Wiko Europe’s fastest growing mobile phone brand in 2013.
Wiko Mobile is in 19 countries including Nigeria and Kenya. It is the second best selling brand in France with a market share of about 14 per cent traditional sales and 22.6 per cent online sales second only to Samsung.
