Media Houses Breaks Media Ethics Over 2015 Election - Femi Falana

On the first  Annual Lecture of School Of Liberal Studies, Mass Communication Department of Lagos State Polytechnic in Ikorodu Lagos.  Barrister Femi Falana (SAN) ensure that the ethics of journalism remain sustained as the 2015 general election draws closer, the School of Communication and Liberal Studies (SC&LS) of the Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH) Ikorodu, put together, earlier today, Tuesday, January 27, 2015, her first Annual Public Lecture Series tagged ‘2015 Election; Legal and Ethical Issues in Media Reporting.’
The lecture was aimed at shedding light on the media and enlightening journalists on their responsibilities towards the general election.
In the opening speech rendered by the Dean of School of Communication and Liberal Studies (SC&LS), Barr. Adebayo Alake, he stated that the school of communication and liberal studies came into existence by the approval of the state government, adding that the lecture was organized with the aim of reminding journalists about the importance of practicing within the legal principles of reporting.
He further mentioned that the lecture will enlighten members of the mass media and enable journalists embrace the legal and ethical issues in reporting, noting that a lot of journalists don’t even know these ethical and legal issues.
The guest speaker, Barr. Femi Falana, Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) spoke expressly on the Nigerian constitution and the responsibilities of the media practitioners towards this general election.
He said “According to the time table published by INEC last year, the 2015 general election has been fixed to hold next month, on the 14th and 15th of February precisely, in order to conduct free and fair election, the constitution has charged the mass media with the responsibility of mobilizing and sensitizing Nigerians to choose good credible leaders for themselves.”
Speaking on the right to vote as citizens, he mentioned that “Sometimes last year, the Senate President, David Mark, declared that Nigerians should be allowed to vote in this election with or without the Permanent Voters Card (PVC), because it is their right as a citizen of the country.
